Frequently Asked Question

Why is my student getting a "Cryptohome" or sign-in error on their Chromebook?
Last Updated about a month ago

What is a "Cryptohome" or profile error?
When a student signs into a Chromebook, the device creates a secure, encrypted "vault" (the cryptohome) on its local hard drive. If the device can’t unlock this vault—usually due to a password change, a sync glitch, or corrupted system data—the login will fail. How do I know if a profile is corrupted?
Common signs include:

  • An explicit error message: "Could not mount cryptohome."
  • "Password Loop" where the device rejects a known-correct password.
  • The screen hanging on a white window or spinning icon immediately after login.

What is the quickest fix?
The most effective solution is to Remove and Re-add the User. This deletes the corrupted local "vault" and forces the Chromebook to build a fresh, synced one from Google’s servers. How do I remove the corrupted profile?

  1. On the sign-in screen, click the small arrow (⌄) next to the student’s name.
  2. Select Remove this user.
  3. Confirm by clicking Remove this user again.
  4. Have the student click Add Person and sign in with their current credentials.

Will the student lose any work?

  • Safe: Anything in Google Drive, Gmail, or Chrome bookmarks (these sync automatically).
  • Lost: Anything saved locally in the "Downloads" folder.
  • Note: Remind students to always move important files to Google Drive to avoid data loss during these resets.

What if removing the user doesn’t work?
If multiple students have the same issue on one device, the hardware itself might need a Powerwash (factory reset) to clear the system state.

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R at the sign-in screen.
  2. Follow the prompts to Reset.
  3. Critical Step: When the device restarts, you must manually connect it to the eddevices SSID using the password BLSeddev.
  4. Once the student is added, the device will be restricted to the eddevices SSID only by management policy
